Niets heeft in de wijnwereld zoveel aandacht getrokken als de strijd tussen de modernisten en de hoegenaamd laatste traditionalisten in Barolo. Mascarello, Rinaldi en Cappellano genieten vandaag van een iconische status, wereldwijd. Terecht, deze wijndomeinen hebben veel gemeen met die andere regio rond Vosne-Romanée, de Côte D’Or.
Ook hier zijn de wijngaarden opgedeeld in percelen, soms zelfs geen bouwplaats groot, ook hier zijn ze in familiale handen en ook hier heb je traditionalisten en modernisten. Generatie op generatie is er een streven om steeds betere wijn te maken en dat geldt voor zowel Bourgogne als voor Piëmonte.
Vroeger toen Barolo nog een blend was die grote huizen maakten van de verschillende productie zones, werd de Nebbiolo van Serralunga gebruikt als basis. Hier in het uiterste oosten van Barolo werd zowel gezocht naar wijn die stevig en sober kon zijn als naar druiven die expressieve en elegante wijn konden voortbrengen. Vandaag is Serralunga ( de lange serre) het cru gebied waar gereputeerde huizen thuis zijn met hun top cuvées als de ‘Gabutti’ van Giuseppe Cappellano, ‘Vigna Francia’ van Giacomo Conterno en de ‘Vignarionda’ van Luigi Pira.
In de jaren 50 begon Luigi Pira land te kopen op de steile hellingen van Serralunga net voor Angelo Gaia als een slokop alle topliggingen inlijfde. Gianpaolo Pira verkocht de druiven aan de grote cantina’s in Alba waar de druiven uit de crus Marenca, Margheria en Vignarionda zeer gegeerd waren.
Begin jaren 90 begon Pira zijn wijnen zelf te bottelen. Hij combineert de traditionele vinificatie op grote fouders met elevering op kleine Franse eiken vaten. In minder als twee decennia poneerde hij de naam Pira tussen de grote namen van Piëmonte. Midden in het Gaia imperium bezit hij als enige nog wijngaarden in Marenca en Margheria.
Vinous: The 2017s are mid-weight Barolos with the classic structure of Nebbiolo. They are often intensely aromatic. Acids and tannins are prominent in many wines. The fruit profiles are ripe, often distinctly red-toned, but not cooked or over-ripe. Perhaps most importantly, the 2017 Barolos are very true to site, which is always a concern with vintages marked by warm weather. The best 2017s are exceptionally polished, vivid and flat-out delicious.
A.Galloni in Vinous jan 2023: Giampaolo Pira makes some of the most gorgeous Barolos in Serralunga. Two wines in particular stand out. The village wine is a bit on the flamboyant side in 2018, but it is quite enjoyable, while the Marenca is a classic, powerhouse wine that captures so much of what makes Serralunga Barolos so distinctive. The Margheria is a bit lighter but still very fine, while the Vigna Rionda would be a great wine if made in any other vineyard than one of Piedmont’s finest. The bar is simply higher here, and there is still some unrealized potential.

Zeer geconcentreerde, diep gevulde Barbera geoogst in Roddino. Ook hier de typische middenweg met deels traditionele elevering op grote fouders en deels een 12 maanden lange elevering op kleine barrique.
Power wijn, krachtig en vol, zonovergoten en rijp.
R. Parker : 91/100 . The Luigi Pira 2019 Barbera d'Alba Superiore is a compact and fruity red with plenty of bold cherry, blackberry and cassis to keep your interest. The wine is smooth and textured, with a good amount of soft weight to wrap nicely over the palate. This wine has the take-charge personality to pair with a Piemontese plate of coniglio ai pepperoni, or a roasted rabbit with mixed peppers. 2021-2025.
Vinous : 92/100 The 2018 is a rich, heady wine. Sweet macerated cherry, kirsch, mint, orange peel and sweet spice give the 2018 a decidedly racy, flamboyant personality. It smid-weight structure notwithstanding. There is plenty of charm and allure, although the style is decidedly ripe tot he point of being exotic.
Gianpaolo Pira is de enige wijnmaker die deze top cru uit Serralunga op het label drukt. De rest van deze topligging is eigendom van Gaia, die de wijn in zijn Sperss ( € 170.00) blend.
Eén klein eilandje Nebbiolo, het filetstuk zit in deze fles. 24 maanden elevering op grote fouders en kleine eiken vaten.
Zeer expressieve, licht rokerige neus met subtiel rood fruit en eucalyptus. Goede concentratie met een kern van rijp, zoet rood fruit en geslepen steen.
Bewaar wijn die uitdaagt om gedronken te worden. Schoolvoorbeeld van een grote jaargang die concentratie aan finesse koppelt.
Vinous : 94/100. The 2018 Marenca is a powerfull Serralunga Barolo. Wild dark cherry, spice, menthol, licorice, plum,dried herbs and macha infuse the 2018 with tons of character. There is plenty of richness and intensity, but thankfully the bruising tannins of the past appear to have been tamed. There is a lot of wine here. This is a fine showing.

Parker: 94/100 You don't see too many wines from the Marenca cru in Serralunga d'Alba, and in fact, looking through the Wine Advocate database, I only see past vintages from this single producer, Luigi Pira. The 2016 Barolo Marenca offers an accessible and open-knit personality with bold, dark fruit and distinctive mineral tones that range from crushed stone to rusty metal. The Marenca aging regime sees a combination of neutral French tonneaux and Slavonian botte grande, and that wood has served mostly to enhance balance and integration. Some 9,000 bottles were produced.
Vinous : 93/100 The 2018 Margheria is georgeous. Hints of truffle, orange peel, cedar, tobacco ans kirsch on the bouquet are immediately alluring. This deceptively mid-weight Serralunga barolo offers tons of aromatic flavor complexity. It’s one of the finer recent versions I can remember tasting and a huge succes for the vintage.
Vigna Rionda wordt door wijngeeks collectief als synoniem genoemd voor de Serralunga stijl. Ze zijn vaak ietsje transparanter, lichter van kleur, met name bij L.Pira, Massolino en, Anselma.
De cru bezit echter een hartverwarmende intensiteit en persoonlijkheid. Het echte Grand Cru niveau herken je in de afdronk, net als in Bourgogne waar je Echezeaux na Vosne proeft.
R.Parker : 94/100. This is the proverbial red-meat Barolo with the structure and stature of both its territory and this emboldened, hot vintage. The Luigi Pira 2017 Barolo Vignarionda shows depth and width with a very rich quality of fruit. That primary intensity adds to the softness of the wine and its considerable textural fiber and layering. This full-bodied Barolo with fruit from Serralunga d'Alba will be remembered for its structure and ample staying power. 2024-2040.
